What's a Mortal Kombat game without violence? Wince-inducing X-Ray moves make a return, as do death-dealing Fatality moves. Mortal Kombat X's fighting isn't quite as smooth as Street Fighter IV's (so far), but I found it much simpler to execute combos than in past Mortal Kombat games. The jerkiness that was present in Mortal Kombat 9 isn't evident in this title improved movement and fighting animations give the game a long overdue fluidity. Kool Kombat Johnny Cage was the only playable character during my hands-on demo, but he showcased Mortal Kombat's new feel with verve. I'm looking forward to it, because each Variation has its own unique combos and special attacks. That's something I'll thoroughly explore when I review the final game. Unfortunately, I didn't have the time to explore Variations in my hands-on demo with a NetherRealms representative. The idea behind Variations is that a fan of a particular Kombatant can use the character in new ways without sacrificing the core moveset. The fan favorite's Variations-Assassin, Mournful, and Royal Storm-transform her into a rush-down character, a sword-toter, and a zone fighter, respectively. A cursory reading of these Variations may recall Street Fighter Alpha 3's Ism mechanic, but NetherRealm Studios has added plenty of its own flavor. As a result, Mortal Kombat X has a roster of both familiar and fresh faces, including Scorpion, Kano, Sub Zero, and Cassie Cage, the daughter of Sonya Blade and Johnny Cage, who possesses elements of both parents' fighting styles.Ībout Those Fighting StylesCharacters have three fighting styles that dramatically alter their play styles. The story of great evils invading the Earth realm isn't new to the series, but Mortal Kombat X gives it a fresh spin by taking place in a period spanning the 25 years after Mortal Kombat 9. To be fair, I played a PlayStation 4 demo build, so hopefully that won't be an issue when the game hits retail. However, I noticed that the frame rate occasionally dropped during those cinematic action scenes. The QTE does a good job of keeping you invested even when you aren't actively fighting.

These aren't sequences that you merely watch they're filled with Quick Time Event (QTE) moments that require you to quickly press or rapidly mash buttons to avoid a fail state. Back to the Grill AgainMortal Kombat X is heavy on story and in-game lore that plays out in action-heavy cutscenes.
